How to price digital downloads on Etsy: minimum price, margin and bundles
To price a digital download on Etsy, start from the floor: the lowest price that still covers Etsy's fees and your own cost per sale. For a US shop that's (your cost per sale + $0.45) ÷ 0.905. Then add the margin you want on top. Below are the formulas, one table of worked prices, and the case for bundles.
This article won't tell you what price "sells". We don't have data on that, and anyone who quotes you a magic range is guessing about your niche. What we can do is the arithmetic, so that whatever price you test, you know what it leaves you. Fees are the ones Etsy publishes for a US shop with a US bank account, checked on 19 October 2026.
Step 1: what Etsy takes from a download
A digital download pays three fees on a normal sale: the $0.20 listing fee (charged again each time one unit of a multi-quantity listing sells), the 6.5% transaction fee on the price, and US payment processing of 3% + $0.25 on the order. There's no shipping, so the transaction fee only applies to the price.
Put together, Etsy leaves you 90.5% of the price minus $0.45. On a $5 file that's $4.07. The full table from $3 to $100 is in Etsy fees for digital downloads, and each fee is explained in our worked example of every Etsy fee.
Step 2: your cost per sale
A file costs nothing to copy, but it isn't free to sell. Your cost per sale is anything you pay each time a copy sells, plus a share of what it took to make the file:
- Per-sale licences. Some commercial licences for fonts, graphics or mockups are priced per sale or per number of copies. Read the licence of everything you used.
- Your time. Say a planner took you 10 hours and you value your time at $20 an hour: that's $200. If you think it can realistically sell 100 copies, that's $2.00 per sale. If it sells 20, it's $10. This part is a guess, so revisit it once you see real sales.
- Tools you pay for every month, split across your expected sales, if you want the price to carry them.
Step 3: the minimum price and the price for your margin
minimum price = (cost per sale + $0.45) ÷ 0.905
price for a target margin = (cost per sale + $0.45) ÷ (0.905 - margin)
Margin here means profit as a share of the price. With a $2.00 cost per sale: minimum ($2.00 + $0.45) ÷ 0.905 = $2.71; for a 30% margin, ($2.00 + $0.45) ÷ 0.605 = $4.05.
| Your cost per sale | Minimum price | Minimum if the sale comes from an Offsite Ad (15%) | Price for a 30% margin | Price for a 50% margin |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $1.00 | $1.61 | $1.93 | $2.40 | $3.59 |
| $2.00 | $2.71 | $3.25 | $4.05 | $6.05 |
| $3.00 | $3.82 | $4.57 | $5.71 | $8.52 |
| $5.00 | $6.03 | $7.22 | $9.01 | $13.46 |
We checked each price by working out Etsy's fees line by line, rounded to the cent half-up, so a price can sit a cent above the formula. If you like prices ending in .99 or .50, round up from these numbers, never down.
The Offsite Ads column matters because you can't choose which orders come from Etsy's ads on other sites. Those sales pay 15% more (12% for shops that have passed $10,000 in sales in any 365 days). A price that only just covers a normal sale loses money on an ad sale. Shops that have never reached $10,000 can opt out in Shop Manager, but they also lose the sales those ads bring.
When a bundle beats a $3 file
The $0.45 of flat fees is what makes cheap files expensive to sell. On a $3 file Etsy takes $0.74, and you keep $2.26, or 75% of the price. On a $10 file you keep $8.60, or 86%.
Now compare five $3 planner pages with a $10 bundle of the same five:
- A buyer who would have bought one page and buys the bundle instead leaves you $8.60 instead of $2.26. The bundle wins.
- A buyer who would have bought all five separately leaves you $11.30 that way, and $8.60 with the bundle. The bundle loses: it saves $2.30 in fees (five separate sales pay $3.70, the bundle pays $1.40), but it gives away $5 of price.
So a bundle pays when it turns one-file buyers into bigger orders, not when it discounts buyers who were already taking everything. A $12 bundle of the same five pages leaves $10.41, much closer to the separate total. Which way your buyers go is something only your own shop stats can tell you, which is why it's worth listing the bundle next to the single files rather than instead of them.
What the formula leaves out
- Sales tax. When Etsy collects sales tax from a US buyer, processing is charged on it too. It adds about a cent on a cheap file.
- VAT on digital items. For buyers in certain countries Etsy adds VAT to the price, collects it and pays it to the tax authority. The buyer pays it, not you, and you don't add it to your price.
- Etsy Ads, if you use them, are a separate ad budget, not a per-order fee.
- Listings that never sell. Listings set to auto-renew cost $0.20 every 4 months, even if they never sell.
- Your own income tax. That depends on where you live and on your situation, so check it with an accountant.
If your bank isn't in the US, only the processing fee changes, but it changes the 0.905 and the $0.45. With a bank in Peru, for example, it's 6.5% + US$0.30, so the formula becomes (cost + $0.50) ÷ 0.87.
Questions
What is the minimum price for a digital download on Etsy?
For a US seller, the price that just covers Etsy's fees and your cost per sale is (cost per sale + $0.45) ÷ 0.905. With $1 of cost per sale that's $1.61; with $2 it's $2.71. If the sale comes from an Offsite Ad, divide by 0.755 instead.
How do I price a digital download for a profit margin?
Divide (cost per sale + $0.45) by (0.905 minus your margin). For a 30% margin with $2 of cost per sale: $2.45 ÷ 0.605 = $4.05.
Should I sell digital files as a bundle on Etsy?
A bundle saves the flat fees on every extra file, and it pays when it turns buyers of one cheap file into a larger order. It costs you money when it only discounts buyers who would have bought every file anyway. Offer it next to the single files and compare.
Not tax or accounting advice. For your own taxes, talk to an accountant. Fees are the ones Etsy publishes for US sellers, checked on 19 October 2026 on the Help Center pages listed below. Etsy can change them at any time, and your Payment account is always the final word on what you were charged. The costs, hours and bundle in the examples are made up. Nothing here is a promise of sales or income.
